Children of Men

1 - Children of Men

In 2027, in a chaotic world in which women have become somehow infertile, a former activist agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea. Stars: Clive Owens, Julianne Moore Why You Should Watch: For one it is beautifully shot and directed,a single-take scene that will make your eyes welt, and your heart stop and come back to life simultaneously.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

2 - Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

As an asteroid nears Earth, a man finds himself alone after his wife leaves in a panic. He decides to take a road trip to reunite with his high school sweetheart. Accompanying him is a neighbor who inadvertently puts a wrench in his plan. (Lorene Scafaria “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) Stars: Steve Carell, Keira Knightley Why You Should Watch: It’s such a dark humour in watching how people prepare for the end of the world. You will laugh, but it will (should) also leave you with a feeling you don’t know how to process, which I think is amazing.

Blindness

3 - Blindness

A city is ravaged by an epidemic of instant “white blindness”. Those first afflicted are quarantined by the authorities in an abandoned mental hospital Stars: Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo Why You Should Watch: Brilliant concept, depicting scenes of the desperation of humanity. It’s harsh, it’s gritty. It really makes you realize how easily our society and humanity could be destroyed by, in this case, just losing our sight. (based on book of same name) TRIGGER WARNING.

Carriers

4 - Carriers

Four friends fleeing a viral pandemic soon learn they are more dangerous than any virus. Stars: Chris Pine, Piper Perabo, Lou Taylor Pucci, Emily VanCamp Why You Should Watch: It has a zombie movie feel without the zombies. An infection movie that’s dark and gritty, but despite the lack of ‘action’ and primary setting of a car, it is still seriously suspense packed.

How I Live Now

5 - How I Live Now

An American girl, sent to the English countryside to stay with relatives, finds love and purpose while fighting for her survival as war envelops the world around her. Stars: Saoirse Ronan, Tom Holland, George MacKay Why You Should Watch: Probably the most likely way the world would end- war. Add gorgeous cinematography, contrasting the darkness of humanity with the hope of it, and you’ve got one of the most realistic takes of a what-would-happen-if questions.

The Road

6 - The Road

A post-apocalyptic tale of a man and his son trying to survive by any means possible. Stars: Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Charlize Theron Why You Should Watch: It has some of the most emotionally disturbing scenes ever filmed. It will leave you drained, depressed but moved beyond words. ( ps Read the book if you want to feel even worse)

Pontypool

7 - Pontypool

A psychological thriller in which a deadly virus infects a small Ontario town. Stars: Stephen McHattie, Lisa Houle, Georgina Reilly Why You Should Watch: Because Canada made a movie that doesn’t suck. Yes it’s low budget, but it’s arguably (by critics) one of the best zombie-thrillers, focusing more on the fear than the the zombies themselves. Before you go suggesting more zombie movies in the comments, this is the exception because the movie really isn’t all that much about zombies ok.

Monsters

8 - Monsters

Six years after Earth has suffered an alien invasion a cynical journalist agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through an infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border. Stars: Scoot McNairy, Whitney Able, Mario Zuniga Why You Should Watch: If you know my lists, you know I cannot do Alien movies. I hate them for many many reasons. This movie however, I loved. If that doesn’t sell you alone; it about survival, the way it is filmed makes it seem realistic, and it’s scary without the cheap scare tactics. Pls no yelling at me about alien movies in the suggestions, make your own list for dem extraterrestrial lovers.
